Sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise for many years. This is contributed by the irresponsible sexual activity in our society today.Due to increased concern by part of the society an STD awareness month was created at the 2009 Congressional Resolution to help in raising awareness.
This month is mainly meant for people to reflect o their sexual action, pass knowledge to people about this STD.It is sad that this month is mostly known for its one day fools day rather than for this noble course. April is the STD awareness month. The age group that has and is being treated for this STD mainly range from 15 to 24 years in both men and women.
They are treatable in some cases and are controllable in others only under early detection.Information about STD is relayed to the public through different forums to ensure that they are equipped with the relevant knowledge.I have explained specific aspects that relate to STD below.
What are the different types of STD?
Gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, Syphilis or Chlamydia are some of the common STDs.
Effects of HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS is the most known STI in the world. This STI has no scientific know cure up to date. A the patient is given Anti Retroviral Drugs that help in reducing the effects of the disease. ARVs are the drugs given to a patient to help them normally live by controlling its effects to the body.
To prevent its spread a patient has to take the prescribed drugs, eat healthily and stay away from other infected persons sexually. It can be transmitted during sex, blood transfusion or from mother to child.
Mothers can transmit it to their children through breastfeeding that is they do not follow all requirements given by their doctor. The infant can only be breastfed with the mother’s milk for six months in an exclusive manner in infected mothers.
It can be prevented by using condoms during sex.
Gonorrhea is increasingly being tested positive in most STDs cases in health facilities. The good news is that most bacterium that causes it is treatable the only one that has proven resistant to medication. It can cause infertility to both men and women if not treated. Use of dental dams or condom or abstinence can help in its prevention.
It damages the nervous system and brain if it advances to its late stages. It can get passed from an infected person through genital sex, oral sex or anal. There are so many STIs that can affect the human body, but the above are the most popular.
Examining the symptoms, testing and treatment of STD
Testing can be done in an accredited health facility. Several fluids and substances can be collected for testing which include blood, swabs or urine. Whether it is a positive or negative result be sure to follow doctors’ orders in order to live healthy and well.
